Andrew Schimel, MD grew up outside of Chicago and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from the University of Michigan. He received his M.D. from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Washington University in Saint Louis. Dr. Schimel then completed his fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.
Dr. Schimel’s research interests encompass macular degeneration, diabetes, endophthalmitis, and vitreoretinal surgery topics including retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membranes and macular holes. Dr. Schimel’s research has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, book chapters, and national meeting presentations.
Dr. Schimel is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Diabetic Research Clinical Network and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Dr. Schimel speaks Spanish, spends his free time with his family and friends and loves to travel.
