June 27, 2019 will be an important day as The Center for Excellence in Eye Care says thank you to Dr. Eisner as he embarks on his well-earned retirement. Eugene Eisner, MD was a founding member of the Center for Excellence in Eye Care when our practice formed in 1996. Before helping form our Center, Dr. Eisner was previously in practice in Kendall on his own.
Beginning his medical career as a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Eisner completed his residency program in Ophthalmology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and became board certified in 1973. He served as an ophthalmologist in the Navy at the Bethesda Naval Hospital before coming to Miami. Dr. Eisner became a voluntary faculty member at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute upon opening up his private practice in Miami. He has served as a member of the Miami Ophthalmology society for over 30 years and held the honorable role of President. He was a member of the Dade County Medical Association (DCMA) and served as a Member of the Board of Trustees for many years.
Dr. Eisner served as Vice President of Medical Staff at Baptist Hospital, being President elect for a year. For 6 years, serving 3 terms, Dr. Eisner was President of the Medical Staff, quite a prestigious honor. As Chief of Staff of Baptist Hospital, the highest-ranking member of the medical staff, Dr. Eisner was involved in a critical role to the daily management of the hospital and its patients. He was the only Chief of Staff to serve two terms. He also served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Baptist Hospital for 9 years.
One of the founding members of the South Florida Ophthalmology Self Insurance Trust, Dr. Eisner has also served as a board member for many years. The Trust was founded during the height of the malpractice crisis and has allowed Ophthalmologists to continue to practice with affordable insurance ever since.
Dr. Eisner and his wife have a son and a daughter and 5 grandchildren who all live in Boston. Dr. Eisner’s daughter, Lori, is a PhD psychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and his son, Brian Eisner, MD is a urologist and Assistant Professor of Urology at Harvard University Medical School and Co-Director of the Kidney Stone Program at Massachusetts General Hospital.
It is safe to say they will all appreciate more time with their father and grandfather. One of my favorite memories about Dr. Eisner, is him proudly showing me every new grandchild’s picture after they were born, his smile as he announced their name all while holding his favorite Diet Coke.
Dr. Eisner has given 23 years to our center and our beloved patients who he has genuinely cared for throughout his 46 years of practice total. His patients got to experience a unique combination of his skill along with his genuine care, treating them all like family along the way.
Dr. Eisner, you will be greatly missed but we know you will be enjoying every moment of your time now with your wonderful family. We wish you the very best and thank you for your years of careful service to the Center and mostly to our patients!
